Will Vogt: These Americans / Behind the Hedges

Drawn from Vogt’s acclaimed first monograph These Americans, the exhibition brings together photographs made over more than five decades, documenting the artist’s family, friends, and social circle in Watch Hill, Rhode Island, his family’s ranch in South Texas, and destinations throughout the United States and abroad. Photographing his community since 1969, Vogt offers an insider’s perspective on American upper class at play.

Published in 2023, These Americans received critical acclaim for its nuanced portrayal of privilege and became a sold-out title. Edited by Jennifer Garza-Cuen and Jordan Baumgarten, the book features 134 photographs selected from Vogt’s archive of more than 70,000 images, with an introduction by novelist Jay McInerney.

The exhibition follows the publication of Vogt’s second monograph, Behind the Hedges (Schilt Publishing & Gallery, 2026). While These Americans established Vogt’s raw snapshot aesthetic, Behind the Hedges marks a shift toward more tableau-like photographs, continuing Vogt’s long-term examination of wealth, lineage, and the rituals of privilege from the perspective of an insider.
