Chapman, Anderson, O'Connor, Keeler, Pedrotti, and Horlock Galleries

Opening to the public on May 27, the Art Museum of South Texas will host the traveling exhibition State of the Art: Locate, organized by Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and originally presented at Crystal Bridges and their satellite location, the Momentary.

State of the Art: Locate is the continuation of an exploration into contemporary art that began in 2014, when Crystal Bridges presented State of the Art: Discovering American Art Now. The exhibition sought to showcase art being created across the US and develop the understanding that contemporary art is approachable and relevant to topics of the day. Leading up to the second iteration of the show in 2020, a new curatorial team hit the road visiting artist studios across the nation and ultimately selecting works from 61 artists from across the country.

Re-imagined in three smaller forms for a national tour, the Art Museum of South Texas will present State of the Art: Locate. This version of the exhibition examines the role that exterior factors such as family, location, and information play in creating a sense of belonging and understanding. The works often blur boundaries, underscoring the multitude of factors which influence identity and one’s position in the world. The three thematic groupings in this exhibition include an exploration of expansive ideas of family, a dive into how identity is linked with location, and a probe into artists seeking truths buried in fiction.

Located on the bayfront, the Art Museum of South Texas is the only museum in the world which combines the master talents of internationally acclaimed architects, Ricardo Legorreta and Philip Johnson. The result: a remarkable setting where visitors may experience large scale, multi-media works presented throughout the complex, and an unparalleled viewing experience of the Corpus Christi Bay.

State of the Art: Locate is one third of the original exhibition.  This section presented here, is composed of work by 20 artists presenting 34 works of art of widely varying scale and media.  The exhibition is open May 27, 2022 through September 11, 2022.

The national tour of State of the Art: Locate is sponsored by Bank of America with additional support from Art Bridges.

Organized by Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, Arkansas
