FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: The Art Museum of South Texas (AMST) invites the community to gather together at the AMST on Thursday, May 23, 2019 from 5 to 7 p.m., to wish retiring Director, Joe Schenk, a fond farewell. Remarks honoring Mr. Schenk will take place at 6 p.m. The cost of the reception is free to the public, and a cash bar will be available.

Joe Schenk has served as Director at the Art Museum of South Texas since October of 2007. He holds a BA (1974) in Museum Studies and Business Management from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, a MA Degree in Art Education (1979) from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, and a post-graduate certificate from the Museum Management Institute at the University of California-Berkeley. Schenk has worked at eight museums in six states over the past 46 years and served as a Museum Director for 42 years. Most notably Mr. Schenk was Director of the Mobile Museum of Art (1988-2004), Executive Director, Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, Oklahoma (2003-2007), and the Director of the Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi, Texas (2007 to May 31, 2019). During his career, he has juried 72 shows and curated 38 exhibitions, some of which toured nationally and internationally. In 2002, he received one of five national “Excellence in Peer Review Service Award” from the American Alliance of Museums. Schenk has also led the process of successful national accreditation at two museums, the Art Museum of South Texas being one of them in 2010. He has held leadership positions in several state and regional museum associations.

Joe and his wife Jacque plan to stay in Corpus Christi following his retirement.
