TEXAS ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
(TEKS) ART OBJECTIVES 2012
Four basic strands — perception, creative expression/performance, historical and cultural heritage, and critical evaluation — provide broad, unifying structures for organizing the knowledge and skills students are expected to acquire. Students rely on perceptions of their environment, developed through increasing visual awareness and sensitivity to surroundings, memory, imagination, and life experiences, as a source for creating artworks. They express their thoughts and ideas visually, while challenging their imagination, fostering reflective thinking, and developing disciplined effort and problem-solving skills.
By analyzing artistic styles and historical periods, students develop respect for the traditions and contributions of diverse cultures. Students respond to and analyze artworks, thus contributing to the development of lifelong skills of making informed judgments and evaluations.
THE VISIONARIOS CONNECTION
Visionarios supports TEKS by challenging students to explore and shape their environment through art. Creating a vision of the future requires students to use their perception, imagination, and analytical skills, as well as their knowledge of the world, art techniques, and media. Flint Hills Resources and The Art Museum of South Texas are committed to helping students visualize a productive future they can achieve through disciplined effort and creative thought.
Students also submit a written statement describing their vision, further enhancing the educational value of the contest. These vision statements are part of the judging process.
In addition to complementing TEKS, Visionarios helps students conceive a future they can achieve through education and positive life choices.
As students become more sophisticated in their understanding and abilities, Visionarios offers increasingly challenging artistic opportunities. Students are presented with age-appropriate prompts that serve as the foundation of their artwork.
Visionarios is a high-interest activity because it deals with a matter of great personal importance — a student's own family and surroundings. It also gives students a sense of accomplishment, with all entries placed on public exhibit and winning students receiving cash awards and other recognition.
